The Port Harcourt Zoo, popularly called the PH Zoo by locals, is one of the most recommended tourist spots across multiple travel websites reviewing the city. This 49-year-old zoological park is located in the Trans Amadi area of Port Harcourt. It’s currently owned and managed by the Rivers State Government.
PH Zoo has faced a lot of criticism in the past for its dilapidated facilities and the few animals available. However, recent governments have been making efforts to revive the park. So, whether you’ve visited the zoo before or it’s a first time, you can expect new upgrades, better facilities, and even more animals on your next visit.
Highlights
- A visit to this place will expose you to real-life wildlife beyond what you’ll see during the NatGeoWild documentary show—animals like baboons, tortoises, crocodiles, monkeys, peacocks, and eagles are available for sighting.
- If you pay for a tour guide (cost: NGN 2000), you’ll be able to learn more about these animals, what they eat, and perhaps see them perform a few tricks.
- You can also visit the zoo’s museum, where there is a display of two embalmed lions with some backstory. The lions were killed after they murdered the staff that was feeding them.
